Fine Art Friday – Emily Smith – Vertigo Bar Fight!

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Vertigo Bar Fight!

The first time I saw Dream of the Endless being punched in the stomach by Jesse Custer, I immediately knew I wanted to work with Emily Smith. And this young, talented Perthian’s work has grown better and better since.

Em has recently finished the art on ‘Believe’, adapted from my short play of the same name. ‘Believe’ will be included in ‘Brief Cases’ from Gestalt Comics but it looks like it’s getting its own print run as a one-shot too. Really looking forward to seeing it in print and hopefully we’ll have some previews soon. Em and I are also working on one or two unannounced projects.

Here it is.  Your ‘Fine Art Friday’ from Emily Smith. Click for the full version – you’ll be happy you did.

Sorry I haven’t updated much recently.  Heaps on the go.  Almost all of it secret – movies, more Star Wars, a little something for DC, more Gestalt work on the go, and work for a couple of other publishers on top of all this. When I can say something, I will.  Hope everyone has got themselves a copy of The Deep: Here Be Dragons by now. If not, go here – Buy The Deep!

Brief Cases Receives Australia Council Emerging Writers Grant

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

From Briefcasesbook.com

“We are incredibly happy to announce that Tom Taylor has been selected as a recipient of an ‘Emerging Writers Grant’ through the Australian Society of Authors and the Australia Council.

The total number of applications (226) was almost four times as high as the Literature Board
received last year in the Emerging writers category (58).

In very positive news for the medium, as well as ‘Brief Cases’, three other graphic novel proposals received funding.

This grant will enable Tom to put a lot of energy into Brief Cases and the book will be much stronger for it.”

I will also add that this grant will allow me to write this book while assisting us to eat at a time when we are expecting our second child (and all that goes with it).  Woo Hoo!

A massive thank you to all of the selectors at the Australian Society of Authors, Wolfgang Bylsma, Gestalt Publishing and The Australia Council.

A Sneak Peak At Something On The Horizon – Status Quo With Hugh Phiri

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I noticed Gestalt Publishing have posted an early teaser image for ‘Status Quo’ online and I thought I’d share it.  Status Quo is one of the stories set to appear in my graphic novel ‘Brief Cases’… when I get around to writing it ;)

As well as this small story, artist Hugh Phiri and I are currently working on a new creator-owned series, to be published by Gestalt Publishing, called ‘The Deep’ – A series which, along with another new Star Wars project, has seen me working non-stop so far this week – SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK!!!!

I will post some teaser images of ‘The Deep’ soon.

‘Falling Praying’ Selected For Edinburgh

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Yep, ‘Falling Praying’ is my latest short play to be selected for production at Edinburgh.

‘The Example’ had a great run at Edinburgh last year, picking up a pile of awards and noms along with the larger Bite-Size Theatre show.

Now Straylight Australia are taking ‘Falling Praying’ (about two people who meet, fall for each other… and then fall out of a plane) over there.

Josh Futcher – Winner of Best Male Actor at Short and Sweet ‘o8 – flies high at the Arts Centre, Melbourne in ‘Falling Praying’.

‘Falling Praying’ won a couple of awards last year and was also nominated for Best Comedy and Best Production in Short and Sweet at the Arts Centre.

I’m also currently adapting it into a comic book script for my upcoming graphic novel ‘Brief Cases‘.

Tom Taylor, Colin Wilson’s The Example and Flinch In The Australian

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Colin and I are are interviewed in The Australian newspaper today along with Wolfgang Bylsma from Gestalt Publishing and Erica Wagner from Allen and Unwin.  We’re talking all things comics but the focus is mainly on The Example and Flinch.

Check it out here.

For some reason they added 4 years to my age… this would make me the same age as my wife.

The Example – The Award Winning Play Is Finally A Comic Book

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

A long time ago, in a study not that far away, my short play “The Example” was illustrated by the brilliant Colin Wilson.  Today, thanks to Wolfgang Bylsma and the wonderful people over at Gestalt Comics, it is available over at Amazon and at Gestalt Comics.

Two people. A train station. An unattended Briefcase.

Prejudice versus Preservation.

In the war on terror, will suspicion and fear be the big winners?

“…a skilfully executed commentary on instilled modern paranoia in a brief case of racism at a train station.”

- Media & Culture Reviews

“…touches on the war on terror, notions of trust and suspicion and the bases for them, bigotry, credulity, offbeat romance, superstition, alienation and more. All this, from an abandoned bag on a suburban railway platform.”

- Australian Stage Online

“The Example” features a beautiful cover by Colin Wilson and Justin Randall (“30 days of Night: Eben and Stella”, “Changing Ways”).  The image is of Flinders Street Station, platform 1 – the platform Colin and I both use when we’re unfortunate enough to have to use our very flawed public transport system.

This is a very limited printing of “The Example”, as the story is due to be published in the larger collection “Brief Cases” – coming soon.  Colin and I will have copies of “The Example” for sale at the upcoming Supanova Expos in Melbourne and Brisbane, where we are also providing comic book masterclasses, and we will be very happy to sign these.

A Quick Star Wars: Invasion, Brief Cases And Flinch Update

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Things are moving fast on a lot of my projects at the moment.

First up, the official magazine for Supanova is out this week, which features another interview with Colin and I about the upcoming Star Wars: Invasion series – online link coming soon.

I was interviewed over at the force.net by Mike Cooper (hi Mike), where I was able to speak not just about the series but also about some of my favourite books and writers.  Colin was also interviewed on the site.  They call me Mr. Taylor over there… I like it.

There have also been a few other interview requests which we will definitely get to.

Star Wars editor Randy Stradley has hinted on some boards that there will be an announcement about the series at Wondercon in San Francisco this weekend.  This is a very cool announcement that I’ve been wanting to scream from my rooftop for a while now… not in a freaky ‘lock this guy up, he’s a danger to society’ way, just in a happy way.

Meanwhile, the new Flinch website is up and running with preview art, bloggy goodness and general functionality.  My two stories ‘96000m‘ and ‘White Dove III‘ are both featured, as well as the other quality stories that make up this great book – check it out here.

The Brief Cases online production diary has also been updated with some Colin Wilson sketches and previews as well as some comments from the man himself.

There are a few more things happening that I will hopefully be able to speak about soon.

Stay tuned.

Brief Cases – A New Graphic Novel by Tom Taylor

Monday, January 19th, 2009
In my last post I spoke about ‘Drip’ possibly being published later this year. Then, right on cue, Gestalt Publishing started http://www.briefcasesbook.com/ which is the production diary for my upcoming graphic novel Brief Cases which Drip will hopefully be a part of.
Great to see this progressing so quickly.

Something else I’ve worked on should be available on Amazon any day now too.

Drip… Drip…

Monday, January 19th, 2009
My short play ‘Drip’ has opened at Newtown Theatre in Sydney tonight as part of Short and Sweet. It runs until Saturday so, if you’re in the area, you should go see it… I would, and I’ve seen it before.
Also on the ‘Drip’ front, the comic book adaptation is looking quite likely to be published along with a lot my other writing later this year. I won’t say more until I can but here is a preview page illustrated by the fantastic Tom Bonin – who is currently in a small cottage in England.
