Masterclass and Panel at the Nexus Festival

Monday, May 9th, 2011

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, Colin Wilson and I are guests of NEXUS- Festival of Animation, Comics, Graphic Novels + Moving Image.

I completely neglected to post about this, so please spread the word, all Melbournites.

Colin and I will be running a comic book Master Class on the Tuesday from 3-6pm which we’d love to see YOU at. We will also be part of a panel discussion on Sequential art and Narrative at the ungodly time of 10am on the Wednesday – For anyone who doesn’t know, I write until obscenely late at night.  I don’t normally agree to do things in the morning… I will try to be coherent.

We will also be signing at a booth from 1pm (a much more reasonable time) until 5pm on the Wednesday.  We will have plenty of copies of our work available, including our new Star Wars Invasion: Rescues TPB and Colin may also be doing commissions.

There will be some other great creators signing during the day, including Tristan Jones of TMNT and Ghostbusters fame and Heavy Metal Magazine’s, Katie Houghton Ward.

We may have some of our newest books available (depending on publishers and international mail) for sale but, getting into the spirit, Colin and I will also have a limited amount of our own comics to give away for FREE. So, come down. Support a brand new store. Get free comics.

This Week – Star Wars Invasion: Rescues

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

The trade paperback collection of Star Wars Invasion: Rescues is out this week in comic book stores worldwide. It is also available over at Amazon where, for some reason, it is currently almost half price – http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Invasion-2-Rescues/dp/1595826300 – Very tempted to buy some myself at that price…

“Remember when you first saw Star Wars, that feeling of wonder and excitement at things being new and a wonderful adventure waiting to take you away?  That’s where I was here…If you enjoyed Star Wars then this is a must, pure and simple.” – PDX COMIC GEEK.

Tom Taylor knows how to write a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat and Colin Wilson has made this era of Star Wars his own.” - A COMIC BOOK BLOG

“At times approaching a meaningful theme, other times providing more visceral pleasures, it never fails to entertain. Even the relatively slow parts are kept alive by Colin Wilson’s brilliant penciling. The images of the New Republic soldiers in spacesuits being showered with toxic rain are simultaneously classic and modern, drawing, it seems, from the best aspects of sci-fi aesthetics. The design of the Yuuzhan Vong Tsalok is also awesome, approaching the ferociousness of sci-fi creatures like the Predator. - THE SCI-FI BLOCK

Tides of Hope

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Written and illustrated by some of the world’s finest creators, ‘Tides of Hope‘ will be sold exclusively at the upcoming Brisbane and Melbourne Supanovas, with 100% of profits going to Queensland flood-relief charity activities.

Colin Wilson and I contributed this one page story for Tides of Hope, which I’ve been told I can share here. Click the image for a full resolution version.

Sadly, this isn’t the only charity comic I’ve been asked to contribute to recently, and there will be more coming, but at a time when the internet has been connecting each of us to some shocking, unfolding disasters in real time, it’s nice to be given the opportunity to help in a small way.

Some fantastic international talents like Chris Claremont, Leinil Francis Yu, Paul Jenkins, Alex Maleev, Greg Capullo and Arthur Suydam have contributed to this publication, alongside a ‘who’s who’ of Australian comics creators in Ben Templesmith, Stewart McKenny, Andie Tong, Jon Sommariva, Doug Holgate, Paul Bedford, Jeff Cruz, Bernard Caleo, Jason Franks and many more.  Special mention and thanks must go to Chris Sequiera and Tim McEwen (EVS) who put all of this together, and also contributed work themselves.

We’re big in France… apparently.

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

The second Invasion hardcover came out this week in France, and Star Wars: Invasion artist, Colin Wilson, has just sent me this screen grab from the French Amazon site.

Colin spent years creating comics in France and still keeps an eye on what the market is doing over there.  I can’t read it but I’m assuming ’17′ is the same in English.

To everyone buying our book in France – ‘Merci beaucoup’.

Star Wars: Invasion Returns with Revelations!

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Announced in ‘Star Wars: Insider’ magazine yesterday (and all over the internet overnight) Star Wars: Invasion returns in July with ‘Revelations’.

This image, featuring art by Chris Scalf (of Star Wars: Blood Ties), has been posted all over the internet, so I guess I can post it too…

“Starting in issue #12, this new story arc sees the heroes of the Galfridian family step into their new roles as combatants in the middle of the biggest war the Star Wars galaxy has ever seen. Finn Galfridian has already lost his father and his homeworld to the Yuuzhan Vong, and now he offers himself for Force training by Master Dray-who just might be insane. Elsewhere, Finn’s mother and sister reach the Imperial outpost of Shramar, where refugees from their home planet hope to reunite with their family members. But a mystery turns dangerous and then threatens violent conflict between the New Republic and the Empire! Writer Tom Taylor and artist Colin Wilson continue their ongoing Invasion saga.”

UK Awards – UK Comics – And Falling Praying wins ‘Crash Test Drama UK’.

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Voting for the Eagle Awards in the UK is now open and anyone can vote right here – http://www.eagleawards.co.uk/

Some nice person has stuck me down under ‘Favourite Newcomer Writer’ and ‘Favourite Writer’… for the record, even I can’t vote for me under ‘Favourite Writer’ but I’m sure my mum can.

If you’re planning on voting (thanks), Star Wars: Blood Ties and Star Wars: Invasion are also nominated, as is Rombies (be ready for a Rombies update soon…).  Also, be sure and vote for Chris Scalf under ‘Favourite Painted Art’ and Colin Wilson under ‘Favourite Inker/Penciller’ – Colin is also on the Honour Roll – definitely vote for him there. Justin Randall is also under ‘Favourite Newcomer Artist’.

Staying in the UK, my play ‘Falling Praying’ has taken out the final of ‘Crash Test Drama UK’! Whoop!

Thanks to the director, Dan Clarke, and a big congratulations to the two cast members, Dan Clarke, who took out the ‘Best Actor’ award on the night, and Steph Weller, who won ‘Best Actress’.  Also, a big thank you to organiser, Glynn Oram.

In other UK news, Star Wars Book UK have announced the winners of their ‘Fan Favourites’ for 2010 and it seems we‘ve picked up second place… twice.

“Knights of the Old Republic: Demon by John Jackson Miller et al. was your favourite comic book story of 2010 with 26% of votes cast. However, second place was tied by two different stories by the same author, also a newcomer to the Star Wars expanded universe, Tom Taylor, with his Invasion: Rescues story (with art by Colin Wilson) and Blood Ties: Jango & Boba Fett (art by Chris Scalf) – both gaining 17% of votes cast. Third place goes to another series known to be popular, Legacy by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema, with its concluding arc Extremes (13%).”

Thanks to everyone at SWBOOKS.UK who voted.

Also in the UK, I believe the 5th issue of Star Wars Galaxy is out this week, reprinting Blood Ties and Invasion from the beginning along with Knight Errant.  Pick it up if you’re in the UK.

Colin Wilson – Sylvester Stallone. Together at last.

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Yep, the Hollywood reporter, and a bunch of other sites, have announced that the film adaptation of Colin Wilson’s French comic series ‘Du Plomb Dans La Tete’ (Bullet to the Head), is going ahead.  The movie will be titled ‘Headshot’ and will star, the Italian Stallion, Sylvester Stallone.

I am now insisting Colin illustrates all of the upcoming Star Wars: Invasion pages with ‘Eye of the Tiger’ playing in a loop in the background.

The English language version Colin and Matz’s comic is being collected by Dynamite Publishing this month.
