Surprise! The Example Began Shooting Yesterday.

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

After several setbacks over several years for the film adaptation of The Example, I’ve been very quiet about this new possibility.

However, with this third option, it looks like it is truly going ahead. In fact, I’ve finished the tweaks to the screenplay, it has a wonderful cast, it has a wonderful director, and it began shooting… last night.

Yes, the short film of The Example began shooting last night in Sydney at Green Park Station thanks to the incredible efforts of award-winning director, Jennifer Perott and producer Jiao Chen – both of whom had to get a lot out of me during an insanely busy time (Thanks guys. Well done.)  The Example has a fantastic cast in…

John Batchelor (Underbelly: Razor, Red Dog, Sea Patrol)

And Kelly Paterniti (Griff The Invisible, Cops L.A.C.)

Go well, people. Can’t wait to see it.

Although this is an adaptation of my original play, The Example is also available as a one-shot comic from Gestalt Publishing, illustrated by the man, the legend, Colin Wilson. It can be purchased right here for less than a coffee.

Buy it right here.

“This book should be used in writing classes everywhere, and should be the primary example (no pun intended) for aspiring comic writers to reference when trying to learn how to write dramatic and compelling dialogue.”
– Newsarama

“Brief Cases, late trains, and small talk add up to what is probably the best comic of the year!“ “Taylor and Wilson collaborate to create one of the most tension filled comics I have ever read.”
– The Outhouse.com

“Like Watchmen, it uses a simple 9 panel grid on almost every page, but you won’t even notice. I mean, this is just two people talking at an empty suburban space, yet you’ll be lost in the world it creates.”

A4 To A3 Officially Selected for Rhode Island International Film Festival.

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Our little musical that could, just keeps… coulding.

And the next stop for A4 to A3 is the Rhode Island International Film Festival, after the film received an early ‘official selection’.

“This early acceptance is a direct result of our enthusiasm for the project, which we are certain audiences will share in August. In granting this privilege, our hope is that A4 to A3 will be a highlight of the festival”.

Which is nice…

The film now has an official website which can be accessed right here at http://a4toa3movie.com/

Congrats, as always, to my musical co-writer, Simon Barlow, to Dean Codrington and to Joe Main.

A4 To A3 Heads To Canada

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

A4 to A3 (our musical about love in a photocopy store) is set for its world premiere later this month at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California and yesterday the producers and I received some more good news.

Yep, A4 to A3′s next port of call will be in Canada, after it was selected from over 4000 entries for the Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto.

In other news, the second part of my four part interview is live over at NJOE.com.

And another comic project is brewing…

The Example Has Been Optioned… Again.

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Yes, the ongoing saga that is ‘the filming of The Example‘ has a new chapter.

After several false starts, people using the play script to get funding, meetings with various producers, all sorts of promises, and even one time when I believe the whole thing was filmed but never edited, The Example looks like it really will be a film soon.

Dean Codrington and Bravada Films have optioned The Example for twelve months and have asked me to write the screenplay.  Dean was the director on A4 to A3, which is set for its world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California later this month.  He did a fantastic job with the film adaptation of the musical which Simon Barlow and I wrote and I am quietly confident that he and his team will do an equally great job with The Example.

This ‘little play that could’ has already won a number of awards, been produced in five countries and been adapted into a comic book of the same name.

Next up; The Example action figures!

A4 to A3 – The Short Film Is Complete.

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Last week (before the madness that is Christmas took over) Bravada Films and Producer Joe Main invited me along to an advance screening of A4 to A3 – the film.

Simon Barlow and I have been writing and performing music together for over a decade now.  A4 2 A3 is a short musical comedy about love in a photocopy store that Simon and I wrote a long time ago.   We wrote this whole thing in a few hours… over a few years.  The theatre version took home the People’s Choice Award in the inaugural Short, Sweet and Song festival, after which it was optioned by the lead actor in the musical, Joe Main.  Joe then asked me to write the screenplay for its film adaptation.

Joe Main, who is soon to appear in the feature films ‘Ektopos’ and ‘Centre Place‘, has poured a lot into this film.  No expense has been spared and the quality of the film surprised and delighted Simon and I when we saw it (yes, ‘delighted’… not sure I’ve ever used that word).  The director, Dean Codrington, has done an incredible job with the film, adding some great moments while also remaining faithful to the screenplay.

As a writer, my job entails pouring all of my heart and energy into something and then saying goodbye to it.  I’m well practiced at politely lying to people, while smiling through gritted teeth, about how much I enjoyed their butchering of my work… but I seriously couldn’t stop grinning when I saw this.  Thanks and congratulations to all involved.

A4 to A3 is hopefully about to start a fairly hectic film festival season.  I’m sure it will get a lot of those words inside leaves next to its name.

Centre Place – The Film Has A Trailer.

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Producer Mia De Rauch and director Ben Shackleford continue to do well and the trailer for their latest feature film is looking fantastic.  I read this screenplay early on and (even though it was billed as a “romantic comedy”) I really liked it.

“Centre Place is a sophisticated romantic comedy featuring Melbourne’s style, fashion and culture.  Set in the very European boutiques, cafes and bars of Melbourne’s inner lane-ways the film focuses on the highs and lows of Lizzie Baxter.”

I’m currently writing on a couple of projects for MIA film productions.  I’ve just noticed that one of the projects is actually mentioned on their website, even though I thought it was a secret…

‘Variety’ Reports Colin Wilson’s ‘Headshot’ Has Been Optioned by Warner Brothers.

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Colin Wilson is the talented guy who illustrated my stories White Dove III (current release date; March 09) and The Example (also due to be published next year).

Variety and several other sources have today announced that Warner Brothers have acquired the rights to Matz and Colin’s Graphic Novel series “Du Plomb Dans la Tête” or “Headshot“.
Alessandro Camon of “Thank You for Smoking” fame has been set to write the script. Alexandra Milchan and “Smallville” creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are set to produce.

Unbelievable Colin. Congratulations!

Colin and I are also working on a huge comic book project for a well-known property which I will be announcing (without much detail) very soon.

Here’s one of Colin’s covers.

A Great Week – Film, TV, Comic Books And A Surprise Contact From The USA.

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Earlier this week I was contacted out of the blue by Jeremy Kagan. Jeremy is the Emmy-award-winning director of Chicago Hope who has also directed a bazillion other TV and film projects including one of my favourites, The West Wing.
Jeremy saw my play ‘The Example’ at The Edinburgh Festival and appreciated my “insight, language and tension.” He asked for a copy of the script to share with his graduate film directing students at USC. He also thought it would make a great short film and asked if I was interested in this… pretty amazing.

A huge thank-you to Nick Brice and everyone at Bite-Size theatre who obviously put on a great production.

Meanwhile, it looks like the TV series I was writing earlier this year is happening and, if all goes as planned, it could start shooting as early as November. Another series I’ve been working on also looks set to happen – unless it becomes a feature film instead. I’ll give more details when I’m allowed… almost all of my working life is vague and secretive at the moment.

The film of A4 2 A3 is progressing well and I met with the producer, lead actor and director this week.

My play ‘Drip’ will be opening at the Carlton Courthouse on September 24 as part of Melborn ’08 and the Fringe Festival. Drip is currently in the number 1 spot in the ‘top 40′ unproduced works over at Script Squirrel.

Most of my writing time has recently been given over to the writing of comic books. I currently have five different projects in the works, with the first to be published in January.
I also had a good chat about the future with DFC editor Will Fickling earlier this week. The DFC, based in Oxford, England, is a weekly comic book brought out by Random House. It would be fantastic to see something like this supported by a mainstream Australian publisher.
I’ve recently realised that writing comics is my dream job… it looks like that dream is coming true.

The upshot of all of this is I am on the brink of being a full-time writer. I’d like to give a huge thank-you to Megan and Finn for all of their support.

Thanks also to my editors and sounding boards, Megan and Kym, both of whom have had to listen to and comment on bizzare things for years while treading that fine line between criticism, support and just humoring me.

Lastly, I’d like to thank caffeine for all of its help with my writing between 12 and 4 in the morning.

A4 2 A3 – The Film.

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Last year Simon Barlow and myself wrote a musical called A4 2 A3 – a love story set in a photocopy store.

After it won the ‘People’s Choice’ Award at the inaugural Short, Sweet and Song festival, the film rights were optioned.

All of this disappeared for a while but I’m happy to announce that it’s back on. A new producer, a great lead in Joe Main and a fantastic director in Ben Shackleford; shooting is set to begin in December.
