New Reviews Of The Example And Flinch

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Some truly great reviews have appeared recently for The Example and Flinch – both available through Gestalt Publishing, good book stores, comic book stores and Amazon.

The brilliant site (Cool) Shite has a very thorough review of The Example.

This Schrödinger’s Cat scenario is explored comprehensively via Taylor’s rhythmic dialogue. Sam and Chris riposte to and fro with the sort of casual offhandedness afforded to transient relationships. It’s almost flirtatious, but never dull, and the naturalness of their humour contrasts beautifully with the silent menace of the briefcase… a burst of applause to all concerned, and a note to other creators and publishers out there – this is an example worth following. - (Cool) Shite

And Comic Book Jesus have reviewed Flinch.  Bobby N’s ‘Withheld’ is highlighted as are both of my contributions.

“Other standouts would be Tom Taylor’s work in 96, 000m with artist Tom Bonin. It’s only 6 pages, and opens with two men in a submersible craft on  a deep sea mission. The ending is bold and made me laugh because it came from nowhere and really works. Taylor’s other story, with his Star Wars: Invasion collaborator Colin Wilson is a sci-fi tale called White Dove III. Like Bobby. N, Taylor expands a simple premise in to a powerful story.” - Comic Book Jesus

So, head expanded, I go back to another new Star Wars project and something else completely new – ‘The Deep’… coming soon.

Star Wars: Invasion Reviews (Updated – More Reviews Added)

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Issue 2 of Star Wars: Invasion is out, which means there’s been ample time for reviews of Issue 1 to be written.

I thought I’d highlight some nice, balanced reviews here… I doubt I’ll get around to highlighting the negative ones.

And a few reviews have already appeared for #2, with the fine people at NJOE once again seeming happy, Nerdgasm feeling it was worth picking up more than anything else they reviewed in the week, the Gaijinside staff selecting it as one of their nine books that have ‘risen above all others’ and TFAW giving Star Wars: Invasion #2 a rare 5 star staff review.

Colin and I are very happy to know that we’re ticking some boxes for people already, particularly given that we know what’s coming.  This was early days for both of us.  By issue 3 and 4 we’re really hitting our stride and the next story arc, post set-up, should be huge.

This week.

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

This Wednesday August 5th, ‘Star Wars: Invasion’ #2 hits the stands and you can check out the first three pages right here.

On the same day, my play ‘Falling Praying’ begins at the Edinburgh Festival as part of Straylight Australia’s short play season.  If you’re around the festival, check it out.  It’s a good play, really, I’ve seen it before.  Details here.

Meanwhile, Colin and I have been nailed down for another interview over at eucantina – http://www.eucantina.net/interview-with-tom-taylor-and-colin-wilson.

The Example Reviewed.

The Example received a nice write-up in The West Australian this week.  Apparently The Example uses “dramatic chiaroscuro”… who knew?

Press, Previews, Shoots, Options And More Star Wars?

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

The Short Film of A4 2 A3 is finally shooting this week.  I wrote the screenplay (based on the award-winning musical by myself and Simon Barlow) to this a long while ago, after it was optioned by Joe Main.  Joe has made it happen.

It looks like another short play of mine is also being optioned – more when it’s official.

Speaking of unofficial, I’ve just handed in a script for another Star Wars project and it looks like Randy Stradley (fast becoming my favourite guy) may have something else he wants me to write.

Meanwhile, a guy called Corax (i’m going to assume that’s his real name) contacted me to let me know that there are some preview pics up at the Dark Horse Website for Star Wars: Invasion #1.  Go.  Look.

The second Invasion prequel story will be appearing at starwars.com Friday if you live in the US or Saturday for Australians… if you live in a timezone other than those two, I imagine it will still be appearing around then.

Lastly, I was mentioned in two separate articles in The Age today.

The Teatowel Was My Jedi Robe‘ – written by my becoming-hideously-famous friend Lawrence Leung.  If you haven’t seen Lawrence’s brilliant TV show ‘Lawrence Leung’s Choose Your Own Adventure’, track it down, it’s great.

The other article was ‘The Fan Force‘ by Jake Wilson.  I even got a pic in the paper for that one.

Check them out Star Wars Fans.

Another Star Wars: Invasion Article And A Quick Tease

Monday, June 1st, 2009

There’s a 2 page article on Star Wars: Invasion as well as an interview with Colin Wilson and I in ‘Star Wars Insider’ (the official Star Wars magazine) #108.  Oddly, this interview was the first piece of press we did way back before anyone knew about Invasion.  Check it out.

In other news, I’ve finished and handed in the script to another secret Star Wars project and the cover is already my new desktop wallpaper – really looking forward to this one.

Media.

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

I’ve done a pile of press in the lead up to the launch of  Flinch and The Example.

Here are links to some of it… I had a very good time with the Cool Shite interview.

Tom Taylor on Flinch and The Example – Interview

“Tom Taylor is an ex-professional Juggler who has gone on to juggle plotlines and characters more effectively than any number of balls, chainsaws and kittens.  His plays have achieved great success in recent years, winning any number of awards. However in the last couple of years he has found himself working in one of his great loves: Comics. We spoke to him recently about his creator-owned comics and working on a massive universe like Star Wars…” – Cool Shite.

In a superhero-free world

“The action never leaves the confines of the platform and the characters don’t do anything dramatic, yet the work is full of suspense.” – The Australian

This week’s feature interview –

“Tom Taylor, writer of THE EXAMPLE, FLINCH and STAR WARS: INVASION” – Faster Than Light  (radio program- yep, I talk)

There. That’s most of it.

The Example in the Weekly.

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

There was a nice feature on the Example, which is currently touring regional Australia, in the Diamond Valley Weekly magazine today. Please note: my nose isn’t this big. I was just very close to the lens.
