Two Plays. Two Countries. One Week.

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

A big theatre week sees my short play Falling Praying on at Newtown Theatre in Sydney this weekend (part of the Short and Sweet festival) and The Example become the first of my plays to reach New Zealand, running from the 26th til the 30th of January at The Herald Theatre, The Edge, in Auckland.

Cheers to Falling Praying director, Sharlene Zeederberg (who has been trying to get me on the phone for two weeks – sorry Sharlene, it’s been a crazy couple of weeks!) and The Example director, Tainui Tukiwaho.  Break some legs, guys.

Mystery Flight Through To Final

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

My new short play ‘Mystery Flight’ won the Judges Choice Award on the 21st of November in the Melbourne Short and Sweet Festival.  It is now through to the Gala Final on Sunday the 6th of December at the Chapel off Chapel theatre.

Congratulations to director, Harley Hefford, and the brilliant cast of Jack Angwin, Christine Husband, Tilly Legge and Heath Miller.

Star Wars: Invasion #5 Out Today – And What The Future Holds

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Yep, today is the day.

A holocron will reveal a terrible secret.  We will meet a strange but very important crazy person on Nar Shadaa.  There will be blood aboard the Tsam’ Pah.  And, while some stories will be resolved, others will be frustratingly left hanging until ‘Star Wars: Invasion‘ returns early in 2010.

But fear not.  While ‘Invasion’ is away, we can still play.

‘Luke Skywalker and the Treasure of the Dragonsnakes’ (it really is a long title…) is out in January and is already available for pre order over at Amazon here or Things From Another World here.

‘Rombies’ is set to appear later this month through Gestalt Publishing who have also published Colin Wilson and my one-shot ‘The Example’ which you can get through Amazon or right here.

On the theatre front, my plays ‘Mystery Flight’ and ‘Falling, Praying’ have both been shortlisted for the upcoming Short and Sweet festival in Sydney and ‘Mystery Flight’ is set to debut at the stunning Chapel off Chapel theatre later this month.

Finally, I’ve recently finished writing another Star Wars related work (and had an awesome time doing so), which should be announced later this month.

Drip… Drip…

Monday, January 19th, 2009
My short play ‘Drip’ has opened at Newtown Theatre in Sydney tonight as part of Short and Sweet. It runs until Saturday so, if you’re in the area, you should go see it… I would, and I’ve seen it before.
Also on the ‘Drip’ front, the comic book adaptation is looking quite likely to be published along with a lot my other writing later this year. I won’t say more until I can but here is a preview page illustrated by the fantastic Tom Bonin – who is currently in a small cottage in England.

‘Falling Praying’ Nominated For Awards And The ABC Interview.

Monday, January 19th, 2009
Melbourne Short and Sweet ended on Saturday night at the Arts Centre and ‘Falling Praying’ did very well. The show picked up nominations for ‘Best Comedy Script’ and ‘Best Production’ to add to the ‘Judge’s Choice’ and ‘People’s Choice’ awards it won earlier this year at Crash Test Drama.
Falling Praying was at it’s best on the final night and the audience were in hysterics.

A huge thank you and well done to our incredible director Jacqui Shulz, who took this little play well past the script and created something quite amazing.

Thanks also to our brilliant actors; Josh Futcher, who won the ‘Best Male Actor’ award and immediately called his mum, and Sonya Kerr, who also fared well with the judges.

Josh, Sonya and I had a bit too much fun being interviewed on ABC radio last week and the entire interview, including an excerpt from the play, can be heard here. My voice isn’t normally this high… I think I was trying to appear non-threatening. The interviewer was very interested in my past as a professional juggler and fire eater… I forget people find that interesting.

Writing for Dark Horse Comics, Gestalt Publishing and Theatre

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

For a while now, I have only existed outside of daylight hours.

This is because I have been busily working on a new project for Dark Horse Comics. The project is being illustrated by my good mate Colin Wilson, which gives us even more reason to drink coffee and talk for hours. I can’t say too much more at this stage but there will be an official announcement in early 2009.

I am also working on a number of exciting projects with Gestalt Publishing. Gestalt are doing some big things at the moment and working with some wonderful creators, like award-winning artists Shaun Tan and Ben Templesmith and authors James Barclay and Terry Dowling.

Meanwhile, my play ‘Falling Praying’ will be on at the Melbourne Arts Centre from Wednesday the 17th of December to Saturday the 20th.

Falling Praying

“Two people meet. They fall for each other. Then they fall out of a plane. This is the story of what happens next.”

Bookings through Ticketmaster, here’s the link.

My play ‘Drip’ has also just been selected for Short and Sweet Sydney in 2009.

More Theatre News

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

My new play ‘Falling, Praying’ has made it into the Top Twenty’ of Short and Sweet to be performed at the Melbourne Arts Centre in December.

Meanwhile ‘Drip’ is currently on at The Carlton Courthouse in Playspotting as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

I should also mention that my mum, Anna Taylor, also has an installation piece in the Fringe Festival at BUS gallery in Lonsdale Street Melbourne titled ‘Deception’.

Deception

DECEPTION Deception is an installation of a multitude of abstracted forms, created from knitted wire suspended from the ceiling. These laborious and delicate forms make reference to displaced communities, balancing a fragile appearance with the harshness of their construction.

My play ‘Believe’ will be produced at Dante’s on Gertrude street from the 20th of October to the 1st of November.

‘The Example’ is finished in the UK for a while but it received some great reviews and I recently received this from the producer

“Our most recent Brighton and Edinburgh Festival new writing showcases have enjoyed unparalleled success this year, and I am delighted to offer you the following credits, that as a member of our “Top 16″ playlist, give you the rights to use in connection with your work…”

Brighton Festival Angel Award 2008 for Artistic Excellence – Public Vote

Top 5 Shortlist Carol Tambor (New York) “Best of Edinburgh” Award

Well done again to everybody at Bite-Size theatre.

The Example at the Frankston Arts Centre

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

I was fortunate enough to get along to the Frankston Arts Centre tonight to see my play The Example in Shorter and Sweeter. A really nice production with two great actors in Alan Flower and Sophie Cook. The Arts Centre itself was a bit of a surprise; the theatre was quite modern and seated 800. There was a very good house on the night too.

The Example by Tom Taylor travels across Australia with Shorter and Sweeter.

‘The Example’ is currently part of a twelve venue tour of Australia with seven other short plays in Shorter and Sweeter. These plays are supposed to be the ‘best of the best’ of Short and Sweet, not bad considering their have been over 5000 plays submitted to the festival.
