CGI Adventure Series to Mirror Broad Appeal of Tom Taylor and James Brouwer’s Worldwide Hit Property

Paris–(Marketwire – Jan 22, 2013) – Technicolor (EURONEXT PARIS: TCH) has optioned the rights for the international hit graphic novel series, THE DEEP, created by writer Tom Taylor (Star Wars: Blood Ties, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Injustice: Gods Among Us) and illustrator James Brouwer (Justice League Beyond), and published by Gestalt Comics.

The Deep: Here Be Dragons graphic novel won the Aurealis Award (Australia’s annual literary awards for science fiction, fantasy and fiction) for “Best Illustrated Book / Graphic Novel” of 2011 and was also nominated for “Best Children’s Fiction (illustrated).” Technicolor Digital Productions aims to develop and produce 26 half-hour episodes of THE DEEP, which follows the incredible adventures of a family of underwater explorers. The CGI- animated series targets Kids 8 – 12 and their families. Each self-contained episode of THE DEEP will bring the family a step closer to unraveling the mysteries of the deep sea; and every story will be filled with action, adventure, incredible sea monsters, fantastic vehicles, unbelievable bravery, and the odd family squabble, of course!

“THE DEEP is one of those unique properties that truly appeals to all ages and genders by delivering compelling entertainment in the form of enthralling adventure, heart-pounding danger, laugh out loud humor and incredible discoveries all wrapped in unbreakable familial relationships,” said Steven Wendland, Vice President, Technicolor Digital Productions. “It’s the family we all dreamed of being a part of when we were kids and are anxious and excited to share with our own children now.”

“Technicolor is the ideal animation studio to bring THE DEEP to life,” added Robert Chandler, Executive Producer, THE DEEP. “The CG team at Technicolor has the ability not only to visually knock your socks off, but also to deliver moments of tenderness, character and heart. That’s why THE DEEP and Technicolor make a great partnership. It is that special combination which leads to creating great series and stories.”

THE DEEP follows the Nekton family, comprised of the independent and fearless 12 year old Antaeus, Ant to his friends; his analytical 15 year old sister Fontaine, an astute navigator; and their parents Will, an oceanographer and former Olympic swimmer, and Kaiko, a marine biologist who is fiercely protective of all sea life, including Ant’s pet fish, Jeffrey. Continuing a long family legacy, the Nektons live aboard a state of the art submarine, The Aronnax, while exploring unchartered areas of the earth’s oceans. Each member of the family has unique skills and are all equally passionate about sea life conservation. They seek to solve the ultimate mysteries that appear to be connected to a place we know as Atlantis.

THE DEEP was created by multi-award-winning playwright, screenwriter and author Tom Taylor, best known for his many Star Wars graphic novels and comic books for Lucasfilm and Dark Horse Comics; and illustrator James Brouwer who has worked as a pre-production and concept artist on a range of film, television and games projects for major studios. Brouwer moved into comics in 2011 with The Deep: Here Be Dragons and has since illustrated for DC Comics.

Technicolor Digital Productions produces high-quality CG animation for feature films, television, direct-to-video, commercials, video games and location- based entertainment through its industry-leading production facility in Bangalore, India. The group launched its original content development initiative in 2010 and is currently in development on several projects, including Berkeley Breathed’s Pete & Pickles, and Atomic Puppet, a co-production with Mercury Filmworks. Complementing its services business with original content creation, Technical Digital Productions continues to work with major animation clients including Nickelodeon, DreamWorks Animation, Electronic Arts, Mattel, Rockstar Games, Sony Computer Entertainment America and Square Enix.

Some thanks.

Congratulations and thank you so much to James Brouwer and Wolfgang Bylsma, I may be a writer but I seriously can’t find the words for these two guys right now. Also, a big thanks to Skye Ogden and Gary Edwards at Gestalt Publishing.

Thank you to Kym Bagley, who reads everything I write before anyone else in the world and never gets enough credit.  Thanks to Megan, Finn and Connor, who are watching me write this at 7.30am having not gone to bed yet.

Thank you also to Robert Chandler, our friend and Producer in the UK, who has made so much of this possible and has now joined with James, Wolfgang and myself to form Nekton Productions.

And, of course, thank you to Steven Wendland, Alison Warner, Jean MacCurdy, Fonda Snyder and everyone at Technicolor, who have been a joy to work with, and have treated the Nekton family with so much respect and love.

Lastly, thank you so much to every single fan of The Deep. Thank you for buying the books, for telling your friends about them, for tweeting, for sharing, for reviewing, for blogging and, above all, thank you for having faith in the fish!

Tom.

The Deep – The Vanishing Island is Here! An Underwater Christmas Miracle

Monday, December 24th, 2012

It’s the night before Christmas, and what lands in Australia?

The Vanishing Island from Brouwer and Taylor!

Yes, advance copies of the second volume of The Deep touched down in Australia a couple of hours ago and it is now available from our distributor Madman and direct from Gestalt Publishing.
This is, without a doubt, the book I am most proud to be a part of of this year. James Brouwer’s art is even better here than it was in the first volume, and he and publisher and editor, Wolfgang Bylsma, have worked tirelessly to make this book happen. Thank you so much to James and Wolf, along with Gary, Skye and everyone at Gestalt Comics.
“…reading The Deep makes me happy.” says Joe Kelly in his wonderful foreword, “Pure, unadulterated, non-cynical, I’m-eight-years-old-and-what’s-under-the-Christmas-tree-happy.”
I have to say, in all the long hours sitting at this computer, I am never happier than when I’m creating The Deep and telling the tales of the joyous family Nekton.

The Vanishing Island will be in stores very soon and we will also be bringing you news of an official launch but, if you’d like to get it earlier, get ordering from here and here!

• The sequel to the Aurealis Award Winner for ‘Best Graphic Novel of 2011’ is here!
• When an island is ‘completely not hit by a tsunami’, a new investigation begins for the daring aquanauts, the Nekton family.

Danger, secrets, peril, ancient messages, shocking revelations, and the first word to rhyme with ‘orange’.

The Nektons are back, along with Jeffrey the Fish, in an adventure every bit as mysterious as the deep blue sea.

“Not only does the family Nekton give younger readers an accessible, entertaining gateway into the world of comics, but they remind we elder readers why we started reading the funnies in the first place. In an industry flooded with gritty ‘realism’, have faith in more than the fish – have faith that Tom and James yet again deliver an action-packed, all-ages adventure that’s filled to the gills with heart and mystery.” - Bryan Q. Miller – Writer of the Smallville TV series, Batgirl and Teen Titans.

The Deep is nominated for A Gold Inky Award and Rose And Thorn is solicited.

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

I’m currently doing a writing residency for Inside a Dog – A site “All about books – by young people, for young people” where I’m blogging a few times a week about all things writing. I thought I’d simply post my latest  post from there to cover our latest award news and the Rose and Thorn solicit…

“Some nights (most nights) I stay up very late writing. When the world is asleep and I’m alone, this is when I’m most productive. With only my fellow night-owl friends (usually writers and artists) and editors in the US and England to distract me, things get done. I don’t think I could do what I do without this time, for which all thanks must go to my wonderful wife, Megan – If you see Megan on the street, please start one of those slow claps which is quickly taken up by random strangers until everyone is just cheering her as she walks past.

This morning, I crawled into bed at about 5am, having started the night writing on a strange world in a galaxy far, far away and ending the night writing a love scene under a star-lit sky on a pirate ship.
I woke up to find that the world, as it does, has moved on without me but still involved me in it.

First up, I’ve seen that The Deep: Here Be Dragons has made the longlist for a Gold Inky Award!

On behalf of myself, James Brouwer and Gestalt Publishing, thank you very much to anyone who was involved in choosing our book for this honour.
The Nekton family also asked me to pass on their thanks and congratulations to all of the books who made the longlist (the Nektons may be fictional but that’s no excuse for rudeness).

Next up, I heard I was on the radio in Philadelphia. I was interviewed about all things Star Wars for the radio show ‘Fictional Frontiers’ last week and apparently it aired while I was in bed – a severe case of talking in your sleep.  Not sure when it will be podcast but you can listen to the last time I was on the show right here.

Fictional Frontiers with Sohaib – (Episode 194) – Tom Taylor Extended Exclusive

And last up, a new story I’ve written for DC Comics, Rose and Thorn, has been solicited for September. Which means I can finally share the concept and the stunning cover by Ryan Sook.

Rose and Thorn Tom Taylor Ryan Sook Neil Googe

NATIONAL COMICS: ROSE AND THORN #1
Written by TOM TAYLOR
Art by NEIL GOOGE
Cover by RYAN SOOK
On sale SEPTEMBER 26 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
• The classic DC character Rose and Thorn is taken in a compelling new direction!
• Can a teenage girl with a dark secret, readjusting to life after being institutionalized, learn how to live again?

So, there you have it. The things that happened while I was sleeping… or possibly while I was continually smacking the snooze button.”

The Aurealis Award for ‘Best Graphic Novel’ goes to – The Deep: Here Be Dragons!

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

The Deep: Here Be Dragons has won the Aurealis Award for Best Illustrated Book / Graphic Novel!

The Aurealis Awards, Australia’s most prestigious literary awards for spec fiction, were held on Saturday night at a glittering ceremony at the Independent Theatre in Sydney.

James Brouwer and I would like to extend our thanks to the judges and all involved for the award.

I’d also like to thank my wonderful wife, Megan, our boys, Finn and Connor (who I wrote this book for), Wolf, Skye and Gary of Gestalt Publishing, Colin, Kym, my mum, dad and Kevin J Anderson – who wrote the foreword.

I’d like to congratulate my fellow nominees and winners. A huge congrats to all of the Gestalt nominees who were present on the night, Christian Read, Andrew Constant, Emily Smith and Nicola Scott. Do check out Torn and Eldritch Kid, they are both great books.

Lastly, I’d like to thank every one of you who has championed this book. All of those who have reviewed it, shared it, tweeted it, joined the facebook group, bought it for your friends or young family members, reviewed it on Amazon, Goodreads and other places. Without your help and your continuing support, we’d be paddling around the ocean by ourselves. Thank you, and have faith in the fish.

Here’s the award, it’s heavy, sharp and has been licked by Andrew Constant.

The underwater adventures of the Nekton family gives me more joy than anything else I write, and having it recognized in this way is truly wonderful. I hope that all book stores, schools and libraries in Australia will now stock, and embrace, our multiethnic family of aquanauts.

You can buy The Deep: Here Be Dragons in various book stores and comic book stores, Readings currently have free shipping Australia-wide, you can buy it on Amazon and direct from Gestalt Publishing.

Volume 2, ‘The Vanishing Island’, is well underway.

Here’s a peek.

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

It’s here. This week. The worldwide release of ‘ The Deep: Here Be Dragons’!

The reaction to the advance copies available at San Diego Comic Con was incredible, with meetings and interest from all over the world in our aquatic adventure story. Many fans read the book and came back to tell us how much they loved the story and the beautiful art of the talented James Brouwer. Some were already talking about cosplaying as the Nekton family (Yes. Do this. I want to see this).

Now, the Nekton family need you. I’m kinda proud of this one but for our book to get noticed alongside the enormous wave of books about flying people in tights, we need the word spread. Please help us out by plugging, pimping, tweeting and sharing news of this book using every form of social media you can.  Also, feel free to just tell people, using your voice box – I know it’s ancient tech but it still works.

Anyone wanting a digital copy for review, please contact media@exploringthedeep.com

Product Description

From Tom Taylor (Star Wars: Invasion, The Authority) and James Brouwer, the adventures of a multicultural family of underwater explorers begins here.

“My family are explorers.
We have been for generations.
Some argue that there is nowhere left to explore, that everything on earth that can be discovered has already been found.
They say that to truly explore we need to leave our planet.
While others look up to the stars, my family know that there are also stars beneath us, that there are an infinite number of things that shine brightly in the darkness below.
Most of our world lies unexplored, unexplained. There are things lurking in the seas that have only ever been spoken about in myth.
My family are explorers.
We have been for generations.
We explore…

…The Deep.”
