Fine Art Friday – Anna Taylor – a Special Invitation

Friday, October 26th, 2012

Something a little different for the infrequent Fine Art Friday this week. Today’s artist doesn’t come from the world of comics. Today’s fine artist is the award-winning fine painter, sculptor… and my mother, Anna Taylor.

Yes. My mum has a solo exhibition coming up at the Brunswick Arts Space titled, Earthscape.

“Exploring the minutiae of the land and observing its vastness from the air inspired a consciousness of the replication of surface and pattern – the duality inherent in the macro and micro of the earth’s surface.

These works are the culmination of many years exploring these themes. Inks wash and bleed into each other on canvas. Paint and line are built up, wiped back and rebuilt – reflecting nature’s randomness and resulting in layers of colour and depth.”

If you’re in the Melbourne area, I’d love people to come along and check out the show, which runs from the opening night of Friday the 2nd of November to the 18th. See open times in the invite.

My mum’s work is stunning. Hopefully see you there!

Tom.

This hit Newsarama today. Do I really need to comment.  No. Let Chris Scalf’s cover speak for itself.

Miniseries

Queen Nina and Princess Kaye’s attack on the Yuuzhan Vong collaborators on Shramar has brought Warmaster Tsavong Lah and his armada to the scene.

But the New Republic has some special forces in reserve: namely, every free ship in the sector! It’s a space battle of epic proportions as pirate ships, freighters, and Imperial vessels join the New Republic’s fleet against the invaders from another galaxy!

Chris and I are working on two (possibly three) new series at the moment, including the previously announced ‘Voice of a Dragon’.  More news soon…

Tides of Hope

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Written and illustrated by some of the world’s finest creators, ‘Tides of Hope‘ will be sold exclusively at the upcoming Brisbane and Melbourne Supanovas, with 100% of profits going to Queensland flood-relief charity activities.

Colin Wilson and I contributed this one page story for Tides of Hope, which I’ve been told I can share here. Click the image for a full resolution version.

Sadly, this isn’t the only charity comic I’ve been asked to contribute to recently, and there will be more coming, but at a time when the internet has been connecting each of us to some shocking, unfolding disasters in real time, it’s nice to be given the opportunity to help in a small way.

Some fantastic international talents like Chris Claremont, Leinil Francis Yu, Paul Jenkins, Alex Maleev, Greg Capullo and Arthur Suydam have contributed to this publication, alongside a ‘who’s who’ of Australian comics creators in Ben Templesmith, Stewart McKenny, Andie Tong, Jon Sommariva, Doug Holgate, Paul Bedford, Jeff Cruz, Bernard Caleo, Jason Franks and many more.  Special mention and thanks must go to Chris Sequiera and Tim McEwen (EVS) who put all of this together, and also contributed work themselves.

Goodbye 2010 and thanks to a lot of people.

Happy New Year, everyone!

The ‘End of Year Comic Awards‘ over at NFAMOUS.NET have given ‘Best Miniseries’ to Star Wars: Blood Ties, which was also nominated for ‘Best Limited Series or One Shot’ over at COMICBOOKED.COM “…this piece is truly perfect. Perfect in art, perfect in literature, and perfect in Star Wars. Also, Boba Fett takes down a rancor.” – COMICBOOKED.COM

‘The best Damn Comics of 2010′ over at the ‘The Daily Cross Hatch’ also saw The Example get some love.

A huge year of writing comics has come to an end and I decided to do a bit of a review… then I changed my mind and just made a collage – a visual representation of how much sleep I missed last year.

Yep, all of these books came out in 2010 – that’s two for every month.

A huge thanks to all of the people I was lucky enough to work with in 2010

Thanks to all of the artists – Colin Wilson, Chris Scalf, Al Barrionuevo, Mike S Miller, Skye Ogden, Daxiong, Brian Koschak, James Brouwer, Wes Dzioba, Mike Heisler and Em Smith.

To my wonderful editors – Randy Stradley, Jim Chadwick, Wolfgang Bylsma, Freddye Lins, Kristy Quinn, Gary Edwards, Shannon Eric Denton and Ben Abernathy.

To the ridiculous wealth of cover artists – Jo Chen, Dave Gibbons, Kevin Nowlan, Philip Tan, Pete Woods,  Howard Porter, Chris Sprouse, Tim Seeley, Sean McNally and Jeremy Raapack.

And of course, an enormous thank you to every single person who read my books in 2010.  THANK YOU!

This year is already looking enormous, with a pile of work due for publication and some hints of more big gigs in the pipeline – 2011 preview post coming soon…

This Week – The Final Issue of Star Wars Invasion: Rescues – Preview

Monday, December 20th, 2010

The end of the year has coincided with the end of a lot of my stories.  We had the end of ‘The Authority’ this month, the end of the first arc of ‘Star Wars: Blood Ties’ a month ago, and now, on December 22nd, we have ‘Star Wars Invasion: Rescues #6′, the final issue to this story arc.

Dark Horse have put a special four-page preview up on their website - check it out right here – make sure you’ve read issue #5 of Invasion Rescues first, or big things will be spoiled.

Here’s the first page, proving once again that Colin Wilson is the master of all, Wes Dzioba’s work here is also brilliant.

The end may be here for some projects but there is a lot more coming in the new year.  More ‘Star Wars’ stories are underway, ‘Rombies – the series’ should begin early in the year, Brief Cases will show up, ‘ The Deep’ will finally surface and… a pile of other exciting things will appear that I can’t talk about yet.

‘Star Wars Adventures: The Will of Darth Vader’ Released Next Week!

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Star Wars Adventures: The Will of Darth Vader is no longer being released in August… it’s now coming out next week!

I seriously urge everyone to pick up this book.  I had such a great time writing Vader and I couldn’t be much happier with how the script came together on this one.  A few people have been worried that Vader will be less menacing or less powerful in this book.  Trust me; Vader gets to be Vader;  the Vader I know and respect (and fear), one of the greatest bad guys of all time.  And the supporting character in this book, Luca, gets away with more than you would expect from an Adventures tale.

Gun fights, space battles, pathos and humor.

Get this book!

I will be over at the San Diego Comic Con when it’s released… I imagine I’ll be able to find a copy there.  I’ve been waiting for the release of this book for a very long time.

You can see a preview for The Will of Darth Vader right here – with art by Brian Koschak.

Full SDCC appearance schedule coming soon…

‘Drip’ in Playspotting ‘Falling, Praying’ and Betterfly shortlisted

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

(Lifted from another site)

Melbourne Writers’ Theatre presents its 7th Annual 10-minute play festival, MelBorn08, showcasing eleven of the sometimes raw, sometimes beautifully polished creations of some very talented writers. The plays were chosen from 138 entries, for their ideas, for their theatricality, and most of all for their potential to provide meaning and enjoyment to an audience. They present a mixture of styles, and indeed topics, that may not appear in mainstream theatre, but each has something unique to say about the human condition. Robert Chuter, Artistic Director has scoured Melbourne for the best directors and actors, to support our 11 best writers. Last year the show was a sell out, and many missed a great night of theatre. This year, get in early!

Selected Plays

DRIP by Tom Taylor
SPACE TRAVEL UNLIMITED by Julia Britton
THE LETTER by Phoebe Hartley
TICKING BOXES by Brooke Fairley
THE NEEDLE AND THE DAMAGE DONE by Angus Brown

And for the first time at MelBorn08 – the Actors’ Choice!

‘Believe’ is also being produced in October while the two new plays I entered into Short and Sweet Melbourne, ‘Falling, Praying’ and ‘Betterfly’, have both been shortlisted.

It’s great to see some familiar names on the shortlist, including Jane Miller, Alex Broun and the gigantic Norwegian Carl J Sorheim.

It’s especially good to see ‘We Need to Talk’ make the cut, written by Katie Dircks – a playwright with a wonderful voice.

Shortsighted shortlisted for Short, Sweet and Song

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

A new short musical written by myself and Simon Barlow titled ‘Shortsighted’ has been Shortlisted for Short, Sweet and Song.

A musical about stargazing and mankind’s lack of vision when looking to the future.

‘Jack and Jill went up the hill… but what comes tumbling after?’

Our last musical ‘A4 2 A3′ won the People’s Choice Award in last year’s competition.
