The Deep: Here Be Dragons has won the Aurealis Award for Best Illustrated Book / Graphic Novel!

The Aurealis Awards, Australia’s most prestigious literary awards for spec fiction, were held on Saturday night at a glittering ceremony at the Independent Theatre in Sydney.

James Brouwer and I would like to extend our thanks to the judges and all involved for the award.

I’d also like to thank my wonderful wife, Megan, our boys, Finn and Connor (who I wrote this book for), Wolf, Skye and Gary of Gestalt Publishing, Colin, Kym, my mum, dad and Kevin J Anderson – who wrote the foreword.

I’d like to congratulate my fellow nominees and winners. A huge congrats to all of the Gestalt nominees who were present on the night, Christian Read, Andrew Constant, Emily Smith and Nicola Scott. Do check out Torn and Eldritch Kid, they are both great books.

Lastly, I’d like to thank every one of you who has championed this book. All of those who have reviewed it, shared it, tweeted it, joined the facebook group, bought it for your friends or young family members, reviewed it on Amazon, Goodreads and other places. Without your help and your continuing support, we’d be paddling around the ocean by ourselves. Thank you, and have faith in the fish.

Here’s the award, it’s heavy, sharp and has been licked by Andrew Constant.

The underwater adventures of the Nekton family gives me more joy than anything else I write, and having it recognized in this way is truly wonderful. I hope that all book stores, schools and libraries in Australia will now stock, and embrace, our multiethnic family of aquanauts.

You can buy The Deep: Here Be Dragons in various book stores and comic book stores, Readings currently have free shipping Australia-wide, you can buy it on Amazon and direct from Gestalt Publishing.

Volume 2, ‘The Vanishing Island’, is well underway.

Here’s a peek.

The West Wing – A Special Fine Art Friday

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Emily K Smith recently came and stayed with us during a weekend of comic book launches and fun (we saved her from a terrible backpacker’s in the city). While she was here, I introduced her to the greatest TV show ever produced, The West Wing.

For her birthday this week, (Happy Birthday, Em) she sent ME a present.
This picture of C.J. Cregg (Allison Janney) playing Croquet with a flamingo (her secret service name).

The piece is titled, ‘Allison in Wonderland’… because Em is clever.

Fine Art Friday – Emily Smith – Vertigo Bar Fight!

Vertigo Bar Fight!

The first time I saw Dream of the Endless being punched in the stomach by Jesse Custer, I immediately knew I wanted to work with Emily Smith. And this young, talented Perthian’s work has grown better and better since.

Em has recently finished the art on ‘Believe’, adapted from my short play of the same name. ‘Believe’ will be included in ‘Brief Cases’ from Gestalt Comics but it looks like it’s getting its own print run as a one-shot too. Really looking forward to seeing it in print and hopefully we’ll have some previews soon. Em and I are also working on one or two unannounced projects.

Here it is.  Your ‘Fine Art Friday’ from Emily Smith. Click for the full version – you’ll be happy you did.

Sorry I haven’t updated much recently.  Heaps on the go.  Almost all of it secret – movies, more Star Wars, a little something for DC, more Gestalt work on the go, and work for a couple of other publishers on top of all this. When I can say something, I will.  Hope everyone has got themselves a copy of The Deep: Here Be Dragons by now. If not, go here – Buy The Deep!
