Many Won’t Survive the End of Darth Maul: Death Sentence…

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

So, I guess I may have just inadvertently written the first new lightsaber murder officially owned by Disney. That was unexpected.

This week, Star Wars – Darth Maul: Death Sentence comes to an end every bit as nasty as the Sith lord himself.

I have to say, I’ve absolutely loved writing Darth Maul.

Before I started, I had a few people ask me how I could write a character like Maul. Many saw him as little more than a scary face and a few flips but what I discovered was a complicated, tortured, calculating and Machiavellian character who was a whole lot of fun. I loved testing him in this series, watching him pull through and, finally, watching him pull the strings. I’d love to get the chance to write him again some day. It was also nice to create the Jedi Judd and Salmara, and go back and show some of the childhood of Dray, a character I created in Star Wars: Invasion.
Of course, there’s no way that Maul would have been half the character he was on the page without Bruno Redondo. Bruno’s work on this series has been fantastic. His facial expressions, his action, the small moments and the big, he’s conquered them all along with the brilliant Michael Atiyeh. And all this wrapped up in those gorgeous painted covers by Dave Dorman. Cheers to all of these guys along with Michael Heisler, Randy Stradley and Freddye Lins.

Thanks to everyone who picked up the series and to everyone who tweeted, shared, and reviewed it. Hope you like the ending.

Here’s a sneak peek.

Star Wars – Darth Maul: Death Sentence #3 is out this week.

We’ve had a huge response from reviewers and fans for our story but how can the story fail when Bruno Redondo and Michael Atiyeh have been combining to bring you scenes like this.

Seriously. Look at this page.

Look. At. It!

Now you’ve looked, the rest of the preview can be seen right here –

One Big Week. Two Star Wars Books. Maul V Fett.

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

Yes. This week I have, not one, but TWO Star Wars books out.

The final issue of ‘Star Wars: Blood Ties – Boba Fett is Dead’ will be hitting the shelves at exactly the same time as the first issue of ‘Darth Maul: Death Sentence’. Rather than have them compete for your love, why not pick up both?

I haven’t actually seen a copy of either but I’m pretty sure they’ll be okay. Chris Scalf has been killing it on the pages of Blood Ties and I can’t wait for people to see Bruno Redondo’s first foray into the Star Wars universe.

“Tom Taylor finds something of interest in every scene to ensure you actually haven’t seen all of this before… a hell of a lot of fun. This is a revenge crime thriller. It reads as a Richard Stark novel set in space. The pace clips along and each confrontation is unique and holds its own reason for deserving your attention.” “Star Wars: Blood Ties – Boba Fett Is Dead” is unashamedly an entertaining book.- CBR

“Tom Taylor is raising the bar on what can be done with Maul in a comic, and art team delivers all the eye candy readers could want. Darth Maul: Death Sentence #1 earns a flawless five out of five…” – Roqoo Depot

The have shared Dave Dorman’s cover to Star Wars: Darth Maul – Death Sentence #3, so I figure I can now show it here.

Look! Darth Maul and frozen Savage Opress.

Synopsis (don’t read if you don’t want to know).

“While an injured Darth Maul recuperates from his recent battle with a team of Jedi, he plots his revenge—and the rescue of his brother Savage Opress (now in Jedi custody). But it isn’t simply the Jedi that Maul must face; it’s a powerful mining magnate with forces of his own!

Luckily for Maul, the mine owner has made a career out of exploiting the local work force, and the natives are…revolting!

Death Sentence #3 is on sale September 26, 2012. Written by Tom Taylor (Invasion) with art by Bruno Redondo & Michael Atiyeh, and cover by Dave Dorman (Dark Empire, Crimson Empire).”

Revealed! The Cover to Star Wars Darth Maul: Death Sentence #2

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Dark Horse Comics have revealed the second cover to Darth Maul: Death Sentence over on facebook, along with the solicitation info, so I figure I can now share it here.  This issue has the longest lightsaber battle I’ve ever written inside (it’s Maul, the guy deserves an epic lightsaber battle, he knows how to chop people up) and Bruno is already killing on the art.
Dave Dorman does it again.

On sale Aug 29
FC, 32 pages

It’s a perfect storm of mayhem as brothers Darth Maul and Savage Opress collide with an army of mercenaries, augmented by a team of visiting Jedi!

The only thing that can make Darth Maul angrier than he is about the price on his head is having his brother captured by the man who put it there. If you thought two Sith were dangerous, wait until you see Darth Maul on his own!

Darth Maul: Death Sentence Artist Announced – Bruno Redondo.

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Yes! Bruno Redondo, who illustrated my two-part story in DCUO Legends, ‘The Brainiac/Sinestro Corps War’ is the artist on Star Wars: Darth Maul – Death Sentence.  Couldn’t be happier to have Bruno on board for this. His character work and expressions are just perfect and his action is fantastic.
Obviously, I can’t show you any art from the series yet but here’s an early concept sketch Bruno sent me of Maul. I think it shows enough to whet the appetite…

‘Star Wars: Darth Maul – Death Sentence’ Announced!

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

Raaargh! As announced by The and Rebel Scum, the next Star Wars series I’m writing is ‘Darth Maul: Death Sentence’ – coming July from Dark Horse comics.
I’m having a great time writing Maul and Savage. These brothers are responsible for probably my highest ever CPP (carnage per page).

I noticed the artist hasn’t been announced (so I won’t say anything here) but I’ve seen the first few pages and they’re great. Can’t wait for the interwebs to see a preview. Until more is announced, here is this stunning cover by Dave Dorman. This is the first cover to grace one of my comics that I couldn’t have as my desktop wallpaper. My son was too scared by it (well done, Dave Dorman).

By now the galaxy has learned the terrible truth: Sith Lord Darth Maul still lives. Worse, he has joined forces with his brother Savage Opress!

The Jedi are searching for them and, after Maul and Opress cut a murderous swath through the Outer Rim, so is an army of mercenaries hired by a wealthy mine owner.

Darth Maul has a price on his head, and for him there is only one way to deal with such a problem: go directly to the source!

Death Sentence #1 is on sale July 25, 2012. Written by Tom Taylor (Invasion) and cover by Dave Dorman (Dark Empire, Crimson Empire)

Darth Maul Returns! (now with Video)

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

Yes, it’s true. As announced by my editor, Randy Stradley over on the Dark Horse Comics blog, I’m currently writing a Darth Maul mini series!

Maul is returning in the Clone Wars TV series and I was lucky enough to get a chance to read the scripts dealing with his return. Fans are in for a real treat. And to show you why I’m so excited, here’s the trailer for Maul’s return in The Clone Wars.

I can’t say much more about the comic series at this stage but it’s shaping up very nicely. Darth Maul may have had his legs cut off but he can still kick ass.

Darth Maul as he will appear in Clone Wars.
